A woman in Shanxi, China, has alleged that her iPhone 14 Pro Max exploded while she was charging it overnight, leading to severe burns on her hand. The incident occurred when the woman, who had plugged her phone in before going to sleep, woke up to find the device on fire. The explosion caused the phone to catch her blanket and part of the room on fire, leaving behind significant damage. The woman has since sought answers about what caused the explosion, as well as who is responsible for the damages, including the injuries to her hand and the fire damage to her rental apartment.
As per a Chinese daily called The Drivers, the incident occurred early one morning when the woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was sleeping. She had plugged in her iPhone 14 Pro Max to charge before going to bed. Around 6:30 AM, the phone reportedly caught fire. The woman, who was still in bed, woke up when she felt the heat of the flames and realized her hand had been burned. According to reports, she turned over in her sleep, and her hand accidentally touched the fire, which caused serious burns to both the palm and back of her hand.
When firefighters arrived, they found that the phone’s explosion had caused significant damage. Video footage of the scene showed that the woman’s blanket had been mostly burned, and the wall of her room was also blackened by smoke. The fire appears to have been intense, leaving behind a visible trail of damage.
The iPhone in question was purchased in 2022, and by the time of the explosion, it had already passed its warranty period. The woman is now seeking answers. She is hoping to determine the cause of the explosion and whether Apple or any other party is responsible for the damages. In addition to the physical injuries to her hand, the fire also caused damage to her rental apartment, which she believes could have been avoided.
Apple has responded to the claims, reassuring the public that they take safety issues very seriously. A spokesperson from the company stated that, even though the phone was out of warranty, they were investigating the matter thoroughly. Apple advised the woman to send the device back for analysis to help understand the cause of the incident. They stressed that such situations, involving safety risks, are their highest priority.
This incident comes at a time when consumer electronics safety is under increased scrutiny, especially as more people rely on devices for long periods, often leaving them plugged in overnight. Apple’s response to this case will likely set a precedent for how similar incidents will be handled in the future.
As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and both the woman and Apple are working to figure out what went wrong.
